Monolithic Staff (SoL Aesthetic Reward) by Halfingr Monolithic Staff (SoL Aesthetic Reward) by Halfingr

SEE THE ANIMATED 3D VERSION HERE: [link]

I was bored out of my skull. =/

Aesthetic reward for the Staff of Light, received after killing xyz people near the Guthixian Monolith in the Wilderness Volcano.

I wish. =P

I thought it might make a good staff.

Could also make a cool shield or 2H sword, but i bet people would moan and complain about how it's too "toony" like WoW weapons.

Based on the giant glowing Monolith in the Wilderness Volcano in Runescape.

Eh... Kinda.

If you look at it though, it looks more like it fell from the sky and plugged up the Wilderness Volcano.

More like the Guthix Throwing Knife. ;)

Eet Ees Magical you know :P

The flighting only needs to stabilize it, so a stone one could work :3

I'd say forget the people would believe that cool designs can only be used on WoW weapons. I really like the idea for the Monolithic Staff. You should work on a whole set :)

I've been thinking about doing more version of more weapons like this.

But I did this on a random spurt of creative genius - every time I try and do something else related to it, it looks like total garbage. =I

Easy come, easy go, I guess. My brain just doesn't like doing the same thing twice. But the concept is there. I don't mind if other people do "Monolithic" themed things (as long they attribute the idea to me of course ;)).

I find a majority of those arguments to practically come down to, "ZOMGosh a SWORD? WoW has those, COPYCAT!!!"

My thoughts? Design to your heart's content. Who cares what comparisons others make? This is fantastic, by the way! Totally needs to be in the game. =)

Yeah, something like that. =P

I really don't mind if people complain about getting too "close" to WoW.

Honestly, there are a lot of things WoW has that Runescape needs. Like instances raids, and more PvP only gear.

But yeah. I finished the 3D version of this. =P

The only reason I can possibly connect in my mind for potential similarities is that RS's lead concept artist is a WoW fan. (I'm referring to *Zephyri.) But I see clear distinction regardless of that, and it's all done so well that I'm not sure why anyone would find a reason to complain anyway.

I saw your 3D take on this -- I could totally see it in game! =)

Hey, well, I'm a WoW fan too. =P

Ever since I got the Quest point cape, I've been working on my Dwarven Paladin (lvl 82) ;).

I see a difference too, it's just that some diehard fans are really butthurt about small discrepancies.

And thank you. =]

I think what a lot of people fail to grasp is that historically, art follows trends like this all of the time. I don't think that in art history, anyone complained when more than one artist attempted impressionism or anything like that. It was a compliment and made it all more interesting.

In this era, artists draw inspiration from one another, also -- especially under similar genres. Historically that's always been a good thing, and it has always represented the communal nature of human beings. It baffles me that anyone would start treating that like a bad thing, now!

It's because in their minds, WoW and Runescape are "opposite ends of the spectrum" in gaming.

A lot of players have it ingrained in their head that WoW has "better graphics" and is "way easier" (not really), and Runescape has awful graphics and has is a lot harder (not really), and therefore, should be completely separate.

It's like a gradeschool clique. Nerds "aren't supposed to" hang out with jocks and cheerleaders, and that kind of malarchy. You've gotta remember, the average age of Runescape players are around 13-18, and the average age of WoW players are around 18-35, but both games attract players of all ages.

Honestly, over the last few weeks of playing WoW, I've come to realize that the Stormwind and Orgrimmar trade channels are just as - and possibly even more - immature than the Grand Exchange.

Stupid stuff... I just don't want to incite some lame argument over WoW vs Runescape on my page. I'm tired of arguing. =I

I think in the end, the RS player base has become older than people realize. The sentiment is still the same. I meet a lot of adults on there, though! (I think there are also a lot of adults on ALL games that don't want to *act* like it, lol.) People need to realize that internet mentality can't be escaped. I've played *text* games with immature players, that's just the net!

Hopefully people will get past their notions some day. RS has a lot of potential, and people with those kinds of biased views you talk about shouldn't hold it back from that! =)
